A few weeks ago Mike had a break from teaching class so we decided to do a road trip to New Orleans. It took us about 5 hours and we stayed for 2 nights.
We rented a one bedroom house in Algiers on the opposite side of the Mississippi from the French Quarter. The house was right down the street from the ferry.
Algiers was a cute neighborhood with an awesome coffee shop.
We walked around the French Quarter, down Bourbon Street, in Jackson Square with the St. Louis Cathedral and around the French Market.
We also did a tour around the Garden District, saw some beautiful old houses and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.
We did a driving tour of Katrina. The tour took us throughout the city and we saw where the levies broke and the hardest hit section of New Orleans - the Lower 9th Ward.
We saw the whole spectrum - crumbling houses, empty lots with hip high grass, new modern housing, and new modern playgrounds.
We ate tons of good food in New Orleans. Po Boys, seafood (oysters and crayfish), pork, coffee, beignets, snow balls, the list goes on and on!
We took the scenic route home along the coast of Mississippi and Alabama.
